No radio dish. -- -- -- -- And yeah. Back it is the radio dead. Stars like Mary McKenna and you with the radio dish dot com it is our best of power of the purse show we are highlighting some remarkable. Women. Who we have the honor and privilege and sure to talk to in the last year percent off to a square this with the -- -- saint Luke's. Hospital system and an incredible position to be an an and wanna talk a little bit because a lot of times. Women that are in the medical industry don't reach the high level that she reached -- you're absolutely right in and this one Nam my miner -- minor change actually. I'm the CEO of saint -- hospital and the health system actually has another and we have new CEO with doctor Mindy Estes. New is another woman he may want to have on the show it simply saint Luke's is like an onion. There are many layers that you. I'm really -- hours on ads should. Absolutely and then makes it more and you shall to have two women in that type -- position absolutely and you know saint saint Luke's health system in general I think is spend. Extremely supportive of women and you're absolutely right in. In many health systems across the country it in the -- the sea suite if you will and perhaps the chief nursing officer is as a woman. And ended on the team but. And most of the time is so pretty male dominated so. I think saint Nixon and the health system and been very supportive of women in an all at all levels of the arguments you have a pretty different kind of background coming into saint -- yes it's not it's it's a typical I did say I do -- people in my position usually have come up through that. Traditional hospital operations route their traditional masters of health administration. Or that clinical routes aren't times my background and all my educational background and really my my work background until. My position at saint Luke's south several years ago was. I'm in marketing strategic planning business development that are on the communications side of miles than me like what we do we could BS hello hospital now we could. -- how brilliant that they recognize that someone with that business background it should be in that role. Where you know at some mention of of a what I do on a daily basis is about communicating in about developing relationships moving things forward -- initiatives forward to working with people in how many times have we all done this and you look back on a conflict aren't misunderstanding or something that didn't go right and you say it was we. We just didn't communicate on the -- yes it's only failure to communicate I'm so that communication background I think has has really has served me well. And I've been on a steep learning curve every. -- oh with Soledad and and then medical. Side to clinical cited the business Cleland and that changes every day it absolutely wouldn't what is a typical day for oh gosh I am now at number one and there's probably not at -- exactly at tip. Typical day. But I I am running from -- meetings at all levels of the organization in a variety of different places. Whether it's at the corporate office and working with this system team. Whether it's and leadership meetings with with my team meeting with physicians and spend a lot of time with physicians and most of those -- breakfast meetings and an evening meetings that. It's it's buried it and it's exciting. And you know it can be tiring to open who is supposed to look at aid job. Opening. And we held in we told you not to ask for job just getting out of cash it would be nice to -- and it's sort of look at a typical job posting for this position or or a leadership position in the hospital typically. What me to even think about applying for it because it it is -- what you would typically see would be perfect G yeah so that's an interesting question my. My leap -- hospital operations and and about nine years ago now I was a CEO at saint Luke's south hospital I really. Didn't apply it was an interest stain set of circumstances there at the CEO position was open. The CEO of the health system at the time rich Hastings and I and been talking about me in my career of it and the last you know six to twelve months prior to that end. When he sat me down and he says -- -- -- take over as the CEO of saint Luke's south. I thought maybe he'd es me ended up to that operations a little bit but that's but then you probably could have picked my job Buffett from the table -- when he offered that job to me and and he said you know we I need -- your business development skills. I was the hospital was fairly new and only been open for a couple of years and and it got off to a little bit of a slow start he said I need you dig it out in the community. To work with the doctors to build the medical staff. -- the programs out there and said you'll learn everything else will also allow asked what what drives you you know that's that's a great question so I think. The really the most important thing for me in his is being a part of health care. And that there is -- there's a mission behind what we do. Being close to the patients and I'm not a clinician I'm not taking care patients iron and a daily basis but AC patience and a -- great things that we do. For them every day and so. That I believe that I wouldn't have the drive that that I currently have. In another industry hospitals aren't they're necessarily raking in the bucks now you know we're very low margin business across across the industry. You know if you look at the bond greater burden the people that buried our bonds at a 3% margin is a good solid margin kind of like. Grocery stores have really low margins. But it's it's not one of these very high margin is is that happens is that how you're judged impartially higher -- say OK Julia look look at this you know that's are really it doesn't really good question and and yes partially any we obviously have to you have to maintain our financial and accountability is in -- financial strength. But we really focus on five areas and we we take a balanced approach to that. One is our our people so we were monitored with turn over rates and how the staff -- satisfied. Quality. Patient satisfaction. And are we taking good care of patients in a way that they feel comfortable and let me just throw in here real quick. That same looks hospital has either won or -- one at the consumer choice award twelve of the last sixteen years. That it's been offered so you're doing something right this is according to the international research corporation absolutely fun facts to really tell you haven't and I'm like that a growth and are we grow -- and you know it offering more services and -- and we'd like to count things more is better in most instances. And then financial so those five areas all. Have kind of the same weight for us and we believe we need to exceed in all of those in order to. -- to survive into two and really take care of the community in the way that you know and and good solid not for profit health system. That's there was a study that came out not long ago on -- it was in the Kansas City Star in the sanitize that women valuing balanced. But the CEO sweet that a lot of women are not no longer seeking that corner office and because they have to put so much. Behind them to get there absolutely. -- your thoughts on them because you are in the corner office I knew it was a hard -- to get there -- -- -- have to make some sacrifices. Is it all worth it. For me it is and but I I completely understand and there are those days when you look at it and say you know how you know this this is really hard -- but I I think it's absolutely an individual's decisions there are a lot of people out there that have that. The talent and the drive team to be in one of these jobs. That choose not to and I think that is it is absolutely fine and some of them choose not to at a certain point in their lives -- -- -- -- Young women -- for answer -- entering the workforce more for those women who are going back to work they need to sit home with their children and those who are looking at. -- changing careers the biggest piece of advice is. Find find an organization. And a culture that fits for you targeted that company that you really. Thank you want to work for. And if you don't quite know talk to. The people that do and talk to the customers of that particular organization and see if that is is a good fit. Julie I would love to talk keep that fishing and shake your learning how to fish tank I love to -- -- For -- -- fly fishing you. Well I've done a little bit of everything mostly -- bass fishing -- crop be fishing outcry but am I am learning how to I I have learned a fly around announcement learning how to fly fished around my -- -- -- eBay your own Mac OS so -- he got your own fish. You know and certain -- and I don't I don't access -- -- -- she -- -- a -- as a competitor as Jim calls one of the physicians at the -- I don't actually help elderly and I Bandana and a green yes yes that was my first my first ever fly fishing -- we want to thank you so much for sharing your fishing. And your CEO expertise with us today -- current Chief Executive Officer for saint Luke's hospital on the plaza thank you so much is spent a pleasure thank you is great to. Be with you today thanks to for the -- the -- not a knowledge there was none of I'll come back it. It was so hard to figure out how many different movie had so many wonderful women on who choose and I think probably sometime down the -- -- have to do another best of for the power of the -- women because their possible that's what I was trying to get out of my mouth earlier was that show was that we have some amazing women who are lined up to be on the show we didn't sound like that are earlier tried to make. A cute little use of some metaphors and in it -- -- hit feeling different amounts of one thing I think there's -- business because magazine has been awesome -- scam and we feature a powerful woman every month and thank you for letting us do that yet in the magazine you can just figured that out there thinking bigger -- ink. Which is of remission payments so we will see you I think we'll be likening color next week -- stick lake Mary McKenna and you at the preview -- can't come on best. -- provided by Robert McCain now with the new lady looks a lot in Westport and I am feeling good on radio yeah.
