Hi I'm military 1980 and started working and is probably about the first time that you and I had a chance to meet. We have known each other for years never really had a chance to test it worked together although -- your longtime partner. When the -- and and I one of the one of the kindest sweetest nicest most intelligent man I government. He only went to Moscow in 1994 war with heart to heart and I have some funny stories you gonna have to share template I would love to have them here on the written -- or sell those lessons Hartnell -- involved Russian women coming to his room at about 1 o'clock in the morning and he thought he had interview and -- he did not end until Garza who was determined -- time has come brother out and had to come and say I campus when not something more than an interview. Well mine but bless his -- he had no idea of selling -- and god you know I wonder how much was he was my mentor and I was the youngest news anchor and one time twenty. Three I was 22 years I went to Kansas City I had only. And in broadcasting for a year and I started graduated from northwestern university in 1977. In 78 I ended up in South Bend, Indiana at the NBC station there was their only a year and then I had an opportunity to come to Kansas City. The news director at KC MO TV at the time. The theater KC TV he came to South Bend, Indiana so on my broadcast was a week I was a weekend anchor producer. And said would you like to come to Kansas City and -- I -- -- to only 22 not been in the business very very long at all. As green as the Kentucky Democrat who -- but I thought to myself even though I'm excited and scared at the same time and I'm just gonna go for it and so I unbeknownst to me I. When I started as a news anchor because I came this reporter in march of 1979. And three months later Karen Haas who was present. I knew saying that it was -- I'll go to England so yeah. And then they asked me if I would join the anchor desk at six and -- and I was competitor and I found out I was the youngest. Email bank in the country at that time did. Did you know what the time. That's it I I was gonna say that you -- as. I was gonna use the word fodder but that's not the correct word. You were the subject of many a conversation. Amongst journalists and journalism students saying how she and news -- she's so young she hasn't paid -- soon. Absolutely. And that is. The uphill battle that I faced from the time that I started when I looked very young so I didn't feel like I really looked credible so I had to prove myself. Every single time I was behind the microphone or in front of the camera or out in the community. Not just trying to get the credibility and the integrity of consumers but also my coworker is -- And to stop and think about it I was really paving the way at that time as a female. News anchor because at that time. It was pretty much a male dominated I knew -- absolutely and Wendell was even telling me that in the sixties when he started there was only one female and the news from -- she was a secretary -- who. And so it and they were really doing mostly. Male anchor teens in the seventy what you would never have to women. In general you can remember -- government and -- -- -- and you would very seldom have a female solo -- either and so having me on the anchor desk -- went down there was quite an age difference so I looked like I said I looked up to him as my mentor them as my role -- he -- he was the Walter Cronkite of Kansas City the Charles -- And Charles -- for reporting and so I really felt like I needed to. Earned my stripes and I couldn't wait until I had a few years under -- now couldn't wait until. Analysts say in my late thirties or in my forties that I would. Feel like a real veteran 123 years you will work together and then one day it happened as as it happened to Mary and I -- suddenly you're no -- -- -- here now and -- and I we weren't the longest running anchor team in the country and so you know I have to I just -- say one thing. And and that is. I feel so blessed that I was in news anchor. With went on during those years and with our -- eighteen I mean in the first year that we were together. We hit a forty share of the market that was spent it was never it was on her right in in and now today that's just don't like -- as it's ever -- And so even though there and I always had this motto and that is that was my Montana he only used conditions broadcast. So you never assume anything. And through the years I've always felt like I had to prove myself over and over and over again never rested on my -- and so. Here -- went from being the youngest anchor to being -- When Milan being the longest running -- team. And yes it was you know 2425. Years later when I was that okay it's time for YouTube. To go to move on to move on and you could -- and all of us have done an and that is kind of reinvent yourself you have to I was gonna ask you -- that. People are gonna ask what are you doing now I produced motivational speaker your involved -- our bond. You're you're out there Chris remote with your family as well what is -- can you give women who perhaps are going through the same thing are you women coming up the ranks as we counted. What a -- can give them -- and the entrance to work world. You know I think there are many things that you need to do first of all. You have to ask yourself some several questions. In the most important one is what -- why. Why are you doing what -- -- doing and who are you doing it for -- what are you passionate about it is so important matter what you do in life. Whether it is a hobby or a profession or. Just whatever it is or a community event that you are passionate about what you are doing and when I say what -- why what they mean says. What inspires you and that inspiration. Will help inspire others to accomplish -- circles and one more thing that I always felt -- then again my Montana. And that is what -- a passionate and go beyond that. Those god given talent and -- -- to make a difference for others what is set in your life that really you feel that passion. You wanna test use those -- can intends to make it to his. To get in there in the courtroom and he just -- You remember when it was you could to bring a cigar in -- here or as and he was indignant that we were there -- what did you say. I was stupid then and didn't say things I I know I I wish I was shocked I'm like I am not the person I used to be I wouldn't have been able to hold -- -- I remember being. Eighteen and I was training the new managers at royal water beds and bedrooms in Columbia Missouri who planned for the Colombian -- city's -- children are is that people used to sleep on just yet now. Since she's gone. Tom was never stranger to the camera. If any of the television stations news stations showed up with a camera he was shirt and he was either. Just to the side or he would make sure that he would have eight passing. Walk by so that he would always get in the shot it it was amazing you know and art and radio that kinda become my cog.
