I was a critical care nurse or an icu nurse before that a case you've been around heart stuff from -- -- -- black yes -- One of the things that strikes me is you pick up on things right yes he do you -- And so your feeling had to have picked up on a little bit the lingo in the risk factors and stuff like that. As you. You know have navigated this career. Yeah I went in my favorite parts of my job as mr. coordinator is on the education -- -- to -- in the community. And they -- you -- -- serve I also work with elementary schools so our younger kids know exactly what the signs and symptoms of stroke are. So my son and Parker and is well versed in the signs and symptoms of stroke and this is probably a good time to say that year also a stroke survivor. I am -- Sarah. And that just happens memorial weekend last year folks this is very very resent. And yet here you are today and -- if you're listening on the radio you can't tell that you had a staff. -- they eggs so how to just happened this you're runner I am I'm a marathon runner. And going back to that Monday. I had just got done running it was a torrential downpour and Parker decided he wanted to go with NeuStar backs. We were at a stoplight. And all of a sudden I lost complete use of their left arm -- and feel lane nor can I talk. Thankfully I was able to pull over Kazaa -- wasn't going very fast and I looked at Parker I was trying to ask him to take a coffee -- out of my hand. -- but the words were coming out of my mouth. And he looked at me and he said mommy you're having a stroke. -- my -- in the car -- your. On the rallied in your polling number and your son is recognizing. Your symptoms and here you are a nurse that works with stroke patients. Yes and I wasn't in denial one man and I knew I was going on. And I knew that I had to get to the hospital is passes like heads -- get treated quickly. I need your son and how long does Parker he was sixteen at that time and he's seventeen now that is amazing that he -- as a symptoms. So what happened how to DT with the able to. Comment on line in and to get the help their to the cider apple we always want you to call 911 but. And again I had on my faculties about me I just couldn't communicate. So I knew that -- scared sixteen year old was not going to be able to tell -- 911 dispatch where we Iraq is we didn't have a physical address and we were only half a mile away from the nearest primary stroke care center so we changed places in the car it didn't affect my leg. And he drove me back to the hospital. And I was there within seven minutes of when my symptoms start at. Wow so here's this sixteen year old man. -- -- licensed driver trades his mom is having a stroke in he knows it and he is able to keep control of himself and after driving to the hospital he took care of me very hula wow tradition and kudos. I am. Astonished. That he was able to do that but even more so that in seven minutes you're at the hospital and you were getting treatment. I was getting treatment. With acute stroke care you can get a drug called TP day. And as signs you present to the hospital within three hours of your symptom on sat. I describe TPA to. My patients in the community is a clot buster on steroids. As stroke who is what's happening when you have a stroke most strokes is that a -- goes to your head. And you can't get appropriate blood flow so the brain tissue starts to die if freaking get TE PA knew it helped bust up that -- I describe it is that clot buster on steroids. We can return that blood -- your brain. So instead of me not having the use of my left arm and not being able to speak or smile. I got I've retained and gotten all of those things back. While. That's pretty. Incredible as the isn't even the word miraculously as more blanket so you're in the hospital you're getting this TPA. And it's. EU EU obviously are very highly aware of what's happening and why they're doing everything. Wind Q. Regained the ability to communicate. I was actually being shipped to another hospital just in case they had to do a little bit more with me. That they have had to gone in and retrieved a cry out of my brain. And while I was in the back of the ambulance being taken from one hospital to the other. I started to be able to communicate so every day and I knew and was able to communicate. And could find all of my words and speeches still slurred. And my face was still on the I was actually doing -- her assessment in the back of the ambulance. And it. Act kind of scared the EM TV -- embarrassed patient bring in candidates situations. I thinks apple. That. That's how quickly this dry that that's how quickly TPA works. And that's one of them most powerful messages I have for the community needs you need to we can't treat you when you're having a stroke and we if we get to you quickly. We can reverse your disability. And our second guest is -- walker says the go red for women luncheon is April 25. And it's at the Overland Park convention center. Help other women explore do we still need to have a separate organization for powerful women. You know Clinton and where I'm driving and it's like. Are we to a point now where we can just all be CEOs men women together how does a great question and I think it's actually something my generation dropped the ball on because I think.
